Did you miss it?
The AARC had their 55th International Respiratory Congress on December 5th in San Antonio Texas. The e-mail stated this
“The largest gathering of respiratory professionals in the world features the latest products and services, research and notable speakers. The educational program is packed with courses for respiratory professionals at all career stages”.
In the education program for this event, it states; “The open forum sessions remain a popular AARC event. Attendees can hear hundreds of original abstracts on asthma management, COPD, bench studies, rehabilitation, mechanical ventilation, sleep medicine and management.” ( http://respiratory-care-sleep-medicine.advanceweb.com/ )
Now, latest products and services would include sleep medicine, right? The RRT-SDS would be a respiratory professional “at all career stages”, right? It even states sleep medicine and management as part of hundreds of original abstracts. WOW! Had to be the place for a sleep professional.
I just love the way the AARC has set the standard and lead the sleep industry on the path of awareness and enlightenment of nocturnal disorders. As you know, leadership, enlightenment and education require funding. Starting with fining those pesky California polysomnographers in 2007 ( http://www.californiasleepsociety.org/ ), moving to eliminate those irritating RPSGT’s from titrations in Georgia, 2008, ( http://gasleep.org/ ) to establishing the SDS certificate exam in December of 2008.
All of these things actions have one common denominator, money. Oh did I say that? Oh no you didn’t!
Ok, you got me, it’s really all about education and patient care. Ensuring the patient has the right provider with the right training and education to provide the best service/treatment available. And that my friend is why the 55th International Respiratory Congress had so many opportunities for the sleep professional. Heck, you don’t believe me? Just go look at their agenda, its right here.

Now, when you go to this website you will see the days of the event in a column on the right. Click on each day and scroll through the agenda.
Let me know when you find ONE thing about sleep!
I love the one on Dec 7th. Where the President of the AARC states their goals for 2010. This part in particular, “President Myers said the AARC is also looking at ways to generate additional revenue streams other than Congress attendance and membership dues to support the AARC’s mission to serve its members.”
Now that’s LEADERSHIP at its finest!
Mr. T says pity the fool. Huh? Yeah? Well he does say that, and I’m just saying…he says that.
