What causes them?  Is it all psychological?  Based on our emotions and thoughts of the day?  Can there be a physical reason why?   It has recently been shown that ovulation, which elevates the body’s core temperature, can be a source of the dreams.

A new study conducted on volunteers at the British University of the West of England, has shown that women experience scarier nightmares than men. The study found that working women were more prone to nightmares that left a lasting impression when they woke up.

The study results are based on detailed analysis of 170 volunteers.  Dr Jennie Parker, lead the study at the Bristol-based University. According to Dr. Parker, women experienced scariest nightmares as compared with men because of their body temperature changes cause of monthly cycle.

Psychologists attribute the nightmares in women as a result of temperature changes at start of period and after ovulation. It was shown that women tend to experience more disturbing nightmares during premenstrual days.
