Ken Grey, LAc, DOM, obtained his masters in both Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine from the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine. He
is a staff member at the Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Florida,
and has maintained a private practice in Jupiter since 1995. His

education and programs with special needs students including those with
Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Autism. Dr. Grey has lectured on
Acupuncture, Oi Gong, Tai Oi, Reflexology and women’s health in
relation to Traditional Chinese Medicine and uses his experience in

Western medicine in treating the whole patient.
Ken is also actively involved with the surfing community as stated here
on www.kurtisusa.com.
“This leads us to Dr. Ken Grey AP DOM. Dr. Ken, as we call him, gets
flown all over the world to provide his non-surgical healing services
to the WCT, X-Games and to some of the best athletes on the planet. We
caught up with Dr Ken and saw him busy at work at both the Sunset and
Pipeline contests. He was brought in for the entire Triple Crown and
worked on a guy named Mick Fanning (oddly enough I have a cool flip
flop with the same name on it) and some new kid Jordy Smith.
Dr. Ken was nice enough to talk to us and work his non-drug based
treatment on Big Wave charger Cody Graham (Kurtis Surf Goggles Team
Rider). Check it out and for more on Dr. Ken go to www.Earthschool.tv”
Of Earthschool.tv, Dr. Ken states-
“Earth School is created to stimulate awareness of the amazing
resources available to us as students and teachers spending very
precious time on this planet.”
- Dr Ken Grey AP DOM
Dr Ken treats some of the best female surfers in the world during the
Roxy Jam Festival and Woman’s Longboard World Championships 2007 in
Biarritz, France using acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina.
In this segment competing surfer Julie Cox gets a treatment with Dr Ken
for recurring aches and pains from 2002 when Julie20suffered a major
injury while surfing Santa Barbara’s legendary Rincon, and was out of
the water for six months. News crews film and interview us for
international coverage of this event while Kassia Meador is having her
breasts caste for a Breast Cancer awareness benefit. Ms. Cox went on
to place 5th in the Woman’s World Long Board Championships. See next
Earth School segment featuring Kassia Meador Breast Casting and
Treatment with Dr Ken, check out www.juliecoxsurfing.om for more on Julie Cox.

Besides grace and courage and a FINE sense of balance, one of the most
essential parts of surfing, is a ‘killer smile’ to go with that deep dark ‘Coppertone Tan’!
At www.nowsmile.net we read this-
Dr. Patrick Leconte, owner of Spa for Cosmetic Dentistry, strongly
believes in incorporating Eastern medicine and wisdom into the Western
way of doing things. He has teamed up with Ken who designs his
acupuncture sessions to promote the health of gums and teeth. this is
accomplished by balancing the body and toning organs like the spleen and kidneys.
Enjoy life by surfing, look beautiful when doing it with a great smile and all of this starts with the wonder of birth and the joy of family.
Ken along with his wife, Bella L. Grey, LM, LMT, DOM, a holistic
midwife, formed Wise Woman Holistic Healthcare. Their philosophy in
part states;
‘We believe that childbirth is a key life experience for each family
and that every woman has the inherent right to birth her baby safely in
the environment that is best for her (hospital, birth center or home
birth setting) and with the practitioner of her choice whether that be
a medical doctor, nurse midwife or licensed midwife.
The family is the cornerstone of our social structure and maternity
care must support and promote unity within it. If siblings desire to
be present at the birth they are welcome and their presence is
supported and encouraged.’
Ken was gracious enough to talk to Sleep Compass and answer some of our
questions;
Ken was gracious enough to talk to Sleep Compass and answer some of our
questions;
1.) Ken, as a Westerner, what started your interest in Eastern medicine?
I grew up in a West Indian home. My Mom and Biological Dad from Trinidad. My Dad that raised me from Jamaica. Food is generally a way of healing in the very eastern influenced West Indian culture. I learned very early about fresh herbs and balanced eating. Later I put two and two together and realized how much I already understood about the holistic approach to healing. However, it was my Dad that raised me- Derrick that always told me I had healing hands and that I would be a Doctor….It was just a matter of time.
2.) The Internet has brought the world to our fingers, has it been a
factor in introducing and demystifying acupuncture to the general
public?
Yes, and so has every good physician in our field. As with any area of medicine you have your good, caring and very special physicians, and then you also have those that are in it for the wrong reasons.
3.) Are you finding more and more M.D.’s becoming opening minded to non traditional methods of medicine?
Yes, especially the ones that ends up needing our services for themselves or a loved one.
4.) Drug addictions to pain meds costs the American public millions in
time lost in work productivity, actual job loss, not to mention the
devastation of families of addicts as well as the addicts themselves.
So why isn’t acupuncture embraced more by the insurance companies for pain control?
It’s the responsibility in part of those paying for insurance to request acupuncture as part of their policy and to select insurance companies based on their affinity for supporting integrative medicine. The more requests the closer we are to a more conscious health care system.
5.) You work with a “Western-American healthcare system” doctor; is this by choice and design? If so, what are the benefits? What are the drawbacks?
By choice and design. Our paths were intersected via multiple patients with a love for both of our approaches. As we began to open avenues of communication we found that a more concrete relationship would be mutually beneficial. The benefits have been one of convenience to the patients and one of continuous enlightenment to us as practitioners fusing worlds and exploring new treatment plans for old and new syndromes alike.
6.) Have you used acupuncture to treat patients for sleep problems?
Yes, however sleep problems are usually accompanied by other complaints such as anxiety, stress, chronic cough etc.
7.) How is YOUR sleep?
I sleep great, despite the 3 kids and midnight potty trips. I stay active and my waking hours are filled with many levels of fitness, healing and meditation with occasional tickling and wrestling matches followed by pillow fights.
8.) Are you a surfer?
I do surf; I cannot call myself a surfer. I do not put in enough time. How did you become connected with the pro surfing world? The people I treated locally and while visiting the North Shore paved the way. My practice was built on and continues to thrive on Word of Mouth; my connection to the surf world is no different. For the bigger contests I had to apply to boards and go through alot of extra red tape…all worth it for the experience and appreciation.
9.) Was your wife a mid-wife first, then a doctor of Oriental medicine?
Which came first?
Midwife first, and then massage therapist, then graduated TCM School.
10.) Were you interested in medicine while growing up and was your family supportive of you attending a non-traditional school of medicine?
Answered this in part before…Yes-
11.) I don’t see how you have any ‘free’ time, but if you do, what do
you do for hobbies, or family time?
I am an Artist first and foremost; Healing through many mediums is my gift and talent. I’ve always painted see:
http://www.bodydivine.tv. I just finished my fourth annual spring exhibit- A collection of works from 2007-2009.
I film and edit educational videos see: http://www.earthschool.tv.
I enjoy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of which I am now a green belt, I love to fish the flats for reds and trout, golf, and I keep fit via running, dancing, tennis, yoga and Pilates with some occasional weight training. I attend regular dive meets for my son and daughter. My wife keeps me busy with Date Nights and occasional trips to new destinations. I am working on a book with my partner Kim Bach Horsley in The Body Divine and preparing for our Fall Art Exhibit.
I’m on the board of Jupiter Medical Center and love planning events with them to assist with the financial requirements of the Hospital…that’s alot for now!
12.) In 2008 you were on the panel for the Women’s Health Symposium. This event hosted a panel of experts in a discussion about aging gracefully and caring for your skin, breasts, gynecologic and heart health, and total body health care. What questions were you asked and what suggestions can you give to our readers about aging gracefully?
I was asked alot of questions, too many to list. I love to teach so my answers were very informative and also too long to list. My general suggestion for aging gracefully is summed up by one word: Balance…
13.) Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which a Chinese herb
called moxa is burned on or above the body, or on the end of a needle, to treat and prevent illness. Could you explain how this works in conjunction with acupuncture?
I refer to moxibustion as herbal ultrasound since the heat that is produced by this herb penetrates deeper than the surface. Patients can sometimes detect the heat traveling through the respective channels of the point being stimulated. General applications include warming, tonifying, increase circulation and point stimulation. Great for fertility treatments, sciatica, fatigue and more.
14.) You also use ‘Tui Na’, Chinese therapeutic massage. How does this differ from the therapy performed by massage therapists?
I believe that so much can be achieved by the complimentary therapy of tuina to acupuncture. Patients feel more relaxed and receptive to acupuncture after a tuina treatment. Tuina translates as hand manipulation or hand forms. There are over twenty very distinct hand forms and the way that they are applied, the speed, the location is unique to this form of Chinese Medical massage versus traditional therapy performed by massage therapists. There is also an additional focus on the energy and meridians of the patients versus just the muscles and trigger points.
15.) You created www.Earthschool.tv. Could you explain the concept
behind it and what your goals are?
The Concept behind EarthSchool.tv is one of global awareness and healing. I am always amazed when I find another jewel of information hidden within the mind and life of another human being, I just want to share it with as many as possible. Jewels to me can be anything that makes life and its uniqueness more evident. The human experience is more than just an opportunity to achieve it is in its divine construction an opportunity to learn and to teach. This is what we take with us. Knowledge like light transforms our cells and creates a constant shift in global consciousness seen constantly over time. The goal for Earthschool.tv is to make random meaningful connections between human development, the love we share through our work and lives, and the moments of selflessness we create when we decide to give of ourselves without fear of failure or lack. My dream is that Earthschool.tv will become a central database for positive education with interactive capabilities similar to that of youtube and utilized on earth and beyond for many generations to come.
16.) Why the interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? How does it differ from Karate and Tae Kwon Do?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu demands a different discipline and focus. The strategies are based on utilizing intricate forms of strength in close quarters. The building of ones stamina and mental conditioning is greater in this martial art than most.
Size and brute strength succumb to intelligence and wisdom. I’ve seen a 120 lb individual cause a 230 lb body builder to submit in 2 minutes. This began my general interest; however it’s the results in me and my personal growth that keeps me going back.
17.) Heel Industry was originally founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1979 by Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg, MD, as Biological Homeopathic Industries (BHI). Dr. Reckeweg, who also founded Heel in Baden-Baden, Germany in 1936, relocated to the United States to continue his scientific investigations and introduce U.S. practitioners to Homotoxicology and the Heel products involved in its application.
Today, Heel is one of the largest homeopathic pharmaceutical
manufacturers in the world, with distribution in over 60 countries.
“Heel” stands for Herba est ex luce, which translates to: “plants come
from the light”.
Ken, what is Antihomotoxicology and could you explain some
of your experiences with it?
Homotoxicology, the theory of disease developed by Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg (1905-1985), understands illness as the human body’s defense against toxic substances (homotoxins) that threaten to overwhelm the intercellular matrix.
Antihomotoxicology includes the injectables, orals and topicals developed by leading homeopathic company Heel to regulate the body’s responses to disease and insure optimal functioning of the human body on a cellular level.
I continue to utilize antihomotoxicology in my practice as a form of creating faster longer lasting results than acupuncture alone. Traumeel and its use was my introduction to antihomotioxicology. I was so impressed with the results i saw in patients in the areas of back, neck; joint pain and sciatica that I started to explore other heel formulas and approaches. I am now on the Heel Physicians Speakers Bureau and proudly Lecture on their behalf.
18.) And finally, David Tree, writer and world traveler, asks humanity to search their hearts for the answer to the most important question of our time. What do you consider to be the most important question
people should ask their heart and what is your answer?
Oooh, ok here goes it!
Question: Please ask yourself what is the best world you can see in your minds eye, in your heart and how can you help make it real first in yourself, your home, in the lives of the ones you love, in the life of the stranger crossing your path?
Answer: I’m doing it.
Sweet Dreams Dr. Ken ~
